  17. QUESTION:  The discussion in our town has become quite heated over the
  18. question of cancer and electricity.  It seems that no one has an absolute
  19. answer, and so there is no clear cut course of action.  Can you give an exact
  20. answer to the question "Does living near power lines cause cancer?"  A simple
  21. "yes" or "no" would be most helpful.

  26. arbitrate.  There just aren't enough clear cut scientific studies that permit
  27. an absolute answer at this time.  The question that is receiving the most
  28. attention is whether children who live near high tension power lines are more
  29. apt to develop leukemia.  While statistical evidence indicates that this is
  30. so, the proof that it was the electric or magnetic fields that caused the
  31. cancer is still lacking.  It may take as much as 2 to 3 years to gather enough
  32. data to answer this question with any authority.  Until that time, prudence
  33. seems to be the answer.  A decision about buying a home or choosing a job
  34. should take the possibility of a link between cancer and electrical power
  35. lines into consideration.
